Generations

The first project for Barron's class is called "Generations." You choose something that evolved over three stages, and then make 6 "bits" (2 for each evolution), which you then assemble together into one in the end. It can be your family history, or the anything that's evolved.

I did my project on 3 of the the places I've called home: My house growing up in Minnesota, the one where I lived with my parents until I came to SJSU, and my place with my current roommates (who are some of my best friends).

While cutting up my bits to make my final, I ended up drifting a bit from the actual places themselves, and it ended up being more about the feeling of home that I got from each place.

This project was a a lot of fun to experiment with. I tried watercolor again, made a stamp, even did some 3D (2.5D?) stuff with fabric. The quote in the main area is part of something I wrote before we left the MN house as a message to the new residents. It was a wish that they would love the new place as much as I had. I edited it a bit here, and maybe it's a little cheesy, but I like the idea of my 9-year-old self sending current me a message. She had a lot of faith in me.

The only bit I thought lost something in the cutting was this one, based on my door/wall back at my parents' house.

Pokemon Project: Victreebel

Amy Kim and Peter Le have been putting together a Pokemon art gallery based on the original 151. All proceeds go to charity.

The Pokemon were randomly assigned, and I got Victreebel! I was surprised to have so much fun working with acrylics again. If you can't tell from the photo, I used metallic copper paint in some places. Got it a while ago on a whim, and never got a chance to use it until now. She's a Shiny!
Thanks to Anh for composition help.

The gallery runs from April 29-May 17th, and here is more information if you want to check it out:

Submitting this tonight! Fingers crossed...
Thanks to everyone who gave feedback! Leaving the old post up for reference of what I changed from beginning to end.

Portfolio: First Draft

Hello all! I am applying to the portfolio review this semester. Tonight's the peer review, and I want to fix up a few things before then (some things need to be re-scanned, lighting on the Maya project needs to be fixed, and I still have some figures to go over), but here's what I have so far. There are purposely more pages of figure drawing than I'm planning on having in the end.

Critiques are more than welcome, tear it apart!

113A Acrylic Paint Still Life

Another semester done! Here's the result of my biggest project over the last few months. I'm aware my still life subject is not obvious, but it's the story of how I dislocated my kneecap last November. It was the night the Giants won the World Series, and when my roommate rushed to see me in the hospital, she brought me gummy bears. The weird object on the right is a leg brace. (Thanks to Danny for lending that to me, as I threw mine away in a fit of frustration).

I learned a lot from the beginning to the end. I think my color rendering turned out a lot better than the b/w one! I couldn't quite get the colors to photograph right though, in real life the blue violet is much less blue and more violet. If anyone knows a good trick to fix that, let me know!

Have a good winter break, everyone! :)
